My word – how this week has flown by! Its already Wednesday night and I’m just getting around to posting about Sunday.
Sunday was Mother’s Day and, boy, was it fabulous! Since the guys were out in the field doing training exercises (got to love the army for taking them away for EVERY holiday), we met up and had brunch. Megan made fabulous pancakes with every imaginable topping and yummy omelets customized to each person. Aimee brought the booze for mimosa’s – a drink we only enjoy once a year. And I provided the decor.
I was able to do place settings for everyone – 4 moms and 9 kids! The moms got personalized water bottles, place card asparagus ferns with personalized flags, and these adorable cheese favors – I totally snagged this idea from Twig & Thistle.
The kids all got their own snazzy setting as well. To cut down on dishes, we went for paper. I found these adorable cookies at Wal-mart, of all places, so I used them as place cards for the kids. I just stuck them in candy bags and topped them off with personalized labels. They also got Mother’s Day water bottles, and of course, I had to go with crazy straws.
I think Mother’s Day celebrations are generally pink, but I decided to go with a totally different color scheme, since we all love the color green. I ended up with a soft green, teal blue, and a peachy orange.
After the food festivities ended, the kids painted flower pots for each of the moms and planted poppy seeds in them. I think they turned out amazing!
In addition, Megan had a little trick up her sleeve. She gave all the kids picture mats to color for their moms. Then, she took each set of moms and kids out to a shady area to snap some photos – she’s a great photographer! Here’s the end result (Ronnie’s is so lightly colored that you can’t tell anything is there, but trust me, its got some adorable scribbles on it):
All-in-all, I’d say the day was a smashing success! I’m so glad I got to have yet another Mother’s Day brunch with my girlfriends – 2 years in a row. What in the world are we going to do next year when we’re all spread across the country??
