Today I was prepared with a few more activities and everything went well! Before we read our book, I introduced Ronnie to his first two sight words: ate and so. He had fun listening for the words throughout the book. Then, afterwards I got him to tell me which card said ate and which card said so. I tried to keep things very simple for him, but he had fun learning to read words!
After reading Blueberries for Sal, we discussed how wild blueberries grow in Maine. That brought about a whole geography lesson about how the earth is round and what country we live in and how we are below Maine on the globe. But, we can’t see driveways. ha! It was like a light bulb went on when Ronnie realized that the globe is a picture from way out in outer space, so we can’t see our house. After having some fun with the globe ball, Ronnie colored a picture of Maine (which I forgot to take a picture of!)
Next Ronnie practiced some counting by using a dot marker to make the correct amount of “blueberries” next to each number. I wasn’t aware that Ronnie had already mastered 1-5. This took a matter of 30 seconds to finish. He also practiced his handwriting by tracing the numbers on the worksheet.
Ronnie then decided he wanted to do more numbers, so we brought out our Crayola number flashcards. He traced the numbers on the front with his finger and completed the activities on the back with a dry erase crayon.
I’m a sucker for Montessori activities, so we had to do this one. Ronnie practiced his fine motor skills by using thongs to transfer 10 blue bears from the table to the felt bucket. He counted each one and repeated the activity a couple of times.
Our formal activity for the day was to put together this bear puppet. It was a snap to put together this kit which included cloth pieces that are just stickers that you place on the body. Easy and fun!
Ronnie really enjoyed some dramatic play with little bear. I think we have a new friend in the house…0
